Model planes may be covered under city ordinance

Model airplane enthusiasts may soon have some new rules to follow if they want to fly a model airplane in Albany.

The citizens advisory committee presented a recommendation during Tuesday's commission meeting to limit model aircraft flying to Festival Park and Hilsman Park.

The guidelines, outlined by the Academy of Model Aeronautics, suggested limiting the planes to electric, or other quiet motors, with a total weight of less than two pounds. The suggestions originally included Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, but commissioner Tommie Postell asked the park be removed from recommendations, citing privacy concerns for residents in the area.

"I support it as long as the noise reduction and public safety is priority.  My concern is public safety all the time," said Albany City Commissioner Bobby Coleman.

The issue was raised last year when residents around Hilsman Park complained about noise from remote controlled aircraft.

Commissioners will review the proposal and could vote on an ordinance at their next meeting.
