Police to review post-game clash with fans

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Tucson Police Department will review how it handled crowds of fans around University Boulevard Saturday night after Arizona lost to Wisconsin.

Chief of Police Robert Villaseñor said Monday that the department has plenty to review, including statements, pictures and videos from both officers and fans.

Officers gave the order several times in English and Spanish for people to leave, but Villaseñor said many stayed in the area.

"Once they reach that point that they're not listening to your commands to leave and they're starting to agitate and start  to rile up you really need to get them out of the area quick," he said.

Villaseñor said the order to leave is meant for everyone, bystanders included. Video of a girl being shoved by an officer is one of three videos under review by internal affairs, according to the chief.

"No one should be standing in the area yet these people are walking up like nothing is going on behind the officers, so we have to look at everything," said Villaseñor. "And then if we acted inappropriately, we'll deal with that."

Some students around campus Monday said the reason so many people didn't leave Saturday night is because they wanted to watch the police.

"Cops being there in formation, that just drew kids out even if they weren't going to be there in the first place to see what was happening,"said sophomore Barrett Sulkowski.

"I don't think it was meant to cause harm or injure the cops at all," said senior Lindsay Ferguson. "I definitely think they took it too far."
