Biscuits Opening Day roster released

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Biscuits' 2014 Opening Day roster was announced on Sunday, and is highlighted by three former-first round picks.

In addition to the former first-rounders, the Biscuits are made up of a 2013-organizational MVP, the 2013 Rays Minor League Pitcher of the Year and four top-20 Ray's prospects. There are ten players who will be returning to the Biscuits on the Opening Day roster, as well as 12 players who will make their Double-A debut. There are also three players who have played in the Double-A system outside of the Rays system.

Richie Shaffer (third base), Jake Hager (shortstop) and Grayson Garvin (pitcher) were all selected in the first round by the Rays, and all will make their Double-A debuts in 2014.

Shaffer, 23, out of Clemson University, is ranked as the number 13 prospect in the Rays system. Shaffer recorded a .308 average his first year in pro-ball with Hudson Valley in 2012. In 2013, Shaffer hit .254 in High-A Charlotte while also recording eleven home runs, 73 RBI and was tied for fourth in the league with 33 doubles.

Hager, 21, was drafted 32nd overall out of Sierra Vista High School in 2011. The shortstop was named an All-Star last year after hitting .290 with a .344 on-base percentage in the first half of the season.

Garvin, 24, was a supplemental first-round pick out of Vanderbilt in 2011, the same year he won SEC Pitcher of the Year. The lefty missed the first part of last year due to Tommy John Surgery. He only made five starts with Charlotte, allowing only two earned runs for a 1.08 ERA.

The infielders for the Biscuits will include Ryan Brett, Alejandro Segovia, Cameron Seitzer, Riccio Torrez and Taylor Motter. The outfield will consist of Willie Argo, Jeff Malm and Joey Rickard.

The pitching staff consists of eleven right-handers and four left-handers. They include Andrew Bellatti, Michael Colla, Victor Mateo, Jake Thompson, Braulio Lara, Jimmy Patterson, Santiago Garrido, Matt Lollis, Jared Mortensen, Matt Ramsey, Sam Runion and Dylan Floro.

The Biscuits open the season on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. against the Birmingham Barons. For tickets to Opening Day or any game this season, call the Biscuits at 334-323-2255, visit the box office at Riverwalk Stadium, or go to biscuitsbaseball.com.
