Denham Springs community shocked by first homicide

DENHAM SPRINGS, LA (WAFB) -

Friends and family are at a loss. They've already made a memorial outside and wonder who shot and killed 19-year-old Darrelle Woods.

Someone driving by saw Wood's body lying just outside of this vacant building along Martin Luther King Drive and East Street in Denham.

Someone had shot him in the head.  The family's pastor says authorities can only do so much.

This murder or any murder for that matter is unusual in Denham Springs. 

"It's the first homicide of the year and everyone is pretty shocked that we have a homicide," says Denham Springs Police Detective Glenn Lemoine.

Police urge anyone with information to call Crimestoppers.

The Denham Springs Police Department said it is investigating a murder that happened overnight.

Police identified the victim as Darrelle Woods.

According to witnesses, a body was found just outside of the front door of a vacant building on Martin Luther King Drive at East Street.

Family members said the victim is 19 years old. They added he was found dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to the back of the head.

DSPD said this was the city's first homicide of the year.
