Officials seeing surge in overdoses from heroin and synthetic marijuana

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Baton Rouge Police and health officials are seeing an alarming surge of overdoses from both heroin and synthetic marijuana.

For the second time in two weeks, police are warning the community about synthetic marijuana and heroin.

Hospital officials say it seems Emergency Rooms are being flooded with cases related to those drugs; in fact, police say there are up to eight individuals in the hospital right now.

Doctors at Baton Rouge General say they don't even know how many ways synthetic weed can hit the body, but they do know that it causes kidney damage, puts tremendous strain on the heart, raising blood pressure, and in some cases leading to heart attack. It also causes severe and violent psychotic episodes... And in the worst case death

"We're trying everything that we can to put the word out that you're going to end up in the hospital or possibly end up dead. Or with us, trying to enforce the heroin usage with injecting individuals you will be charged with second degree murder putting you in jail," said Baton Rouge Police Spokesperson Cpl. L'Jean McKneely.

Police say the scary thing about this is that there are so many forms of synthetic week, it is hard to tell exactly what is causing so many overdoses.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner says there have been seven heroin related deaths this year, with two cases pending test results.
