HOUMA, LA (WVUE) -

A woman was killed Friday after she and her son were taken hostage by the child's father, who barricaded himself inside a house in East Houma, according to police.

The victim, identified as Barbara Baker, 22, was shot in the head and later died of her injury.

The suspect, Skylleur Hayes, 22, is in police custody. Police say Baker and Hayes were in a relationship.

The incident began at about 10:20 a.m. when Houma police were called to the 100 block of Senator Circle to investigate a "suspicious incident." When officers arrived, they discovered Hayes holding Baker and the 1-year-old boy and armed with a gun.

Hostage negotiators from the Houma Police Department, Terrebonne Sheriff's Office, Louisiana State Police and several SWAT teams were called to the scene and were able to negotiate the release of the child.

Just before noon, officers heard gunfire coming from the house and found the woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Police entered the home and cornered Hayes in the attic.

At approximately 2 p.m., officers used tear gas in the attic and were able to apprehend Hayes without further incident.

Baker's loved ones who were at the scene Friday afternoon described a devastating loss.

"(Barbara) loved her son. She'd do anything for her son. She has a big heart," said Sharotta Lewis, Baker's aunt. "It's hard right now. I just can't believe it because I'm just in a state of shock."

Hayes was arrested for first-degree murder and on outstanding warrants in Lafourche Parish for probation violation and through Terrebonne Parish for simple robbery with a $100,000 bond.
