Father still wanted in connection to toddlers' deaths

HOUMA, LA (WVUE) - Police are still hoping that the father of two toddlers who died in a house fire earlier this month will turn himself in.

Romell Welsh Sr. is wanted by police for two counts of manslaughter. The toddler's mother, Vaneshia Valentine, is already in custody, booked with two counts of manslaughter and possession of marijuana.

The couple's two children, 1-year-old Ro'miyah Welsh and 2-year-old Romell Welsh Jr., died of smoke inhalation.

Fire officials say March 15 at around 1:30 a.m., a fire started in a garbage can in the kitchen. Police say before the fire started, both parents left the home and the toddlers were alone.

They say the parent had been gone for a while because the house was fully engulfed in flames by the time someone called for help.

"A lot of people expressed their concern to us. You have two innocent children who weren't capable of protecting themselves. Where's the parents? That's the main question. Why weren't they home?" says Lt. Dana Coleman.

Anyone with information on Welsh's whereabouts asked to call Bayou Region Crimestoppers at (800) 743-7433.
