CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Clarksville police say a teenager managed to get away from a man who tried to kidnap her at a gas station.
"It's pretty scary," said Jennifer Norfleet, owner of Bombshell's Salon and Spa. "It's a bit terrifying. There's a bunch of us over here. It could happen to us."
At Bombshell's, the daily grind's all highlights, shampoo, trims, dyes and nail polish. While working hard and meeting appointments, Norfleet said she feels protective of all the young women working for her as a family unit.
"We're kinda like sisters over here," said Norfleet. "We look out for each other."
That's why she's so disturbed by what just happened across the street.
"It hits pretty close to home," said Norfleet.
Clarksville police said a 19-year-old girl was at a Shell station on Wilma Rudolph Boulevard when a man driving a pickup honked his horn, told the girl she was pretty and asked her to go for a ride.
"It appeared to be him flirting with her at first," said Ofc. Natalie Hall of the Clarksville Police Department. "She acknowledged that, but it progressed further than she anticipated."
When the girl turned down the ride, police said the man threw open her car door, grabbed her and tried to pull her out. She kicked him off of her, and he jumped back in his truck and sped away.
Clarksville police said their man made himself easy to catch. They said he came to the exact same Shell station at the same time the next day. A witness recognized the truck, and police made their arrest.
Garon Brown of Clarksville, 25, is now charged with the attempted kidnapping.
While Norfleet feels a certain comfort with an arrest, she said this crime across the street is serving as a reminder to protect those she values the most.
"We do walk out together, keep an eye out for each other," said Norfleet. "If somebody's walking to their car at night, usually two or three of us will keep an eye out the door to make sure they get there."
The family of the 19-year-old victim declined to appear on camera but did tell Channel 4 they were shocked this could happen in broad daylight. They add, the girl is shaken and trying to recover from a very scary day.
