BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
Investigators said a wanted fugitive who was at a hospital, and then ran away, is in custody after a police dog tracked him down during a manhunt early Thursday morning.
The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office reported it was contacted by the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office around 3:30 a.m. to detain Kenneth Wagner, 24, of Prairieville, who was about to be released from Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. APSO deputies asked for the EBRSO to hold him until they could arrive to take him into custody. He was wanted by APSO on the following warrants:
Failure to change registration
No driver's license
Expired motor vehicle inspection sticker
EBRSO spokesperson Casey Rayborn Hicks said deputies were notified by hospital security that he had gotten away and ran toward Ward's Creek. She added a perimeter was set up and because the search area was wooded, a K9 unit from the Baton Rouge Police Department was contacted for assistance.
Authorities reported the police dog and handler tracked Wagner and deputies were able to take him into custody. BRPD said he was caught along Essen Lane around 4:30 a.m.
He was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, but deputies have not released a list of those new charges. A mugshot of the suspect has not yet been provided.
