NAPOLEONVILLE, LA (WAFB) - A driver was arrested on DWI, vehicular negligent injury and other charges after a 4-year-old boy was run over while riding his bike Sunday.
The Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office reported Larry Wiggins, 28, of Napoleonville, was speeding and fleeing deputies at the time of the wreck. The child was flown by helicopter to a Baton Rouge hospital and was last listed in stable condition with moderate to severe injuries.
Sheriff Mike Waguespack said the crash happened Delaune Street in Napoleonville a little after 5:30 p.m. He said a deputy spotted a Chevy Tahoe headed south on LA 1 at a high rate of speed and made a U-turn to try to pull it over.
According to reports, the SUV slowed to turn onto Cancienne Road, sped up again through a residential area and turned onto Delaune Street. Authorities said that is when the child was hit.
Investigators said after the boy was run over the four people in the Tahoe jumped out and ran into a wooded area. Three of the four suspects were caught within 30 minutes. Waguespack said he contacted Louisiana State Police to handle the investigation.
Wiggins was booked by LSP on the following charges:
DWI (2nd offense)
First-degree vehicular negligent injury
Felony hit and run
APSO also booked him with aggravated flight from an officer, speeding (72 in a 50 mph zone) and resisting an officer. Bond has not yet been set.
The investigation is ongoing.
