Troy baseball takes series with two big wins

TROY, AL (WSFA) -

After dropping the first game to the University of Louisiana-Monroe, the Troy baseball team won on Saturday and Sunday to take the series at Riddle-Pace Field.

The Trojans were able to beat the Warhawks by a score of 4-3, in a game they trailed for the majority of the game. Clay Holcomb was a major factor in the win for the Trojans in two clutch situations.

With Troy trailing 3-2 in the eighth inning, Holcomb led off with a single, was able to advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by Garrett Pitts, and then stole third. Three pitches later, Holcomb scored the tying run on a wild pitch.

In the ninth inning, The Trojans were tied with ULM and had the bases loaded with two outs. Holcomb sprinted to second on a softly hit ground ball, which was dropped by ULM shortstop Kodie Tidwell. The botched play allowed Matthew Howard to score the game-winning run for Troy.

Austin Sullivan pitched three scoreless innings in relief and earned his first win of the season.

On Sunday, the Trojans' bats came alive in a record breaking day. Troy downed the Warhawks by a score of 19-3 in seven innings. The Trojans set a new team single-game record by hitting nine doubles in the matchup. The Trojans racked up eleven total extra base hits, including two home runs. The 16-run margin of victory was the biggest by the Trojans since a 17-0 win over South Alabama in 2010. The win was also Bobby Pierce's 200th conference win as Troy's head coach.

Designated hitter David Hall led the Trojans going 5-for-5 with two doubles, a grand slam and six RBI. Hall was just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, and has hit safely in eight consecutive at bats.

Troy scored nine runs in the third inning and had 12 batters come to the plate with eight straight batters reaching base. Troy scored seven more runs in the fourth inning with the help of two doubles and a three-run home run. Troy has hit 24 home runs in as many games.

Troy now stands at 14-10 and 3-2 in the Sun Belt conference.
