BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The House Transportation Committee convinced the author of a cell phone bill to pull the measure.

State Rep. Mike Huval, R-Breaux Bridge, withdrew HB 797, which attempted to ban the use of hand-held cell phones in moving vehicles.

It's a bill that comes up each year and is generally shot down in committee, as was the case again Monday morning.

"Tell me why if we are going to eliminate cell phones, I see people going down the road putting on makeup," said Rep. Terry Brown, I-Colfax. "I see people going down the road reading newspapers. Now, is the insurance going to prohibit the use of newspaper in automobiles and makeup kits?"

The bill is effectively shelved for the rest of the session.
