Bills target speed traps for regulation in city governments

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Two bills will go before a committee to determine how municipal governments handle drivers who speed. Some Louisiana lawmakers are hoping to put the brakes on speed traps in the state.

One bill authored by Representative Regina Barrow of Baton Rouge would prohibit speed traps state wide. The measure also defines a speed trap and the use of stationary and police officer operated radars.

Another measure targets the local governments which generate more than 50 percent of its revenue from speeding citations.

That bill would require those towns to put up flashing signs warning of speed trap areas.
