LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

A 41-year-old Lake Charles man was indicted Thursday on a manslaughter charge in the July death of an inmate at the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center.

Authorities said Shahron Anthony Prater, who was in jail on drug charges, got into a fight with Damon Lee Jones on July 26.

The 35-year-old Jones, of Port Arthur, Texas, picked up an object to strike Prater, authorities said. Prater then reportedly punched Jones in self-defense.

"The fight was very brief in length. From our investigation, it appears that Damon Jones picked up a mop bucket, and when he did, Shahron hit him and rendered him unconscious with one punch," Sheriff Tony Mancuso said at the time.

Jones was transferred to a Lafayette hospital and died a few days later.

Mancuso said it was the first death caused by an inmate during the 10 years he's been sheriff.
