Deputies: Man faces charges after driving off from seatbelt check

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Deputies said a man was arrested after fleeing a traffic stop with his 4-year-old daughter in the front seat.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office said Ronnie Hawkins, 28, of Baton Rouge, was stopped during a routine seatbelt check on Joor Road.

According to the probable cause report, when questioned about his identity, Hawkins drove off with his daughter, who was not wearing a seatbelt.

Investigators said a chase ensued, with speeds reaching up to 90 miles per hour. Deputies said Hawkins ended up driving through four front yards before abandoning the car and his daughter.

He was arrested and booked on the following charges:

Aggravated flight

Resisting arrest

Reckless operation

Child abandonment

Child restraint

Suspended driver's license

No driver's license

Theft (warrants - 2 counts)

The 4-year-old was handed over to a relative.
