BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Investigators believe a fire that destroyed a home early Thursday morning was purposely set.
The Baton Rouge Fire Department said the suspected arson happened in the 2200 block of Maryland Street in Baton Rouge around 12:15 a.m.
Robert Combs with BRFD said the fire was already moving into the attic when firefighters arrived on the scene, but firemen were able to get the two people inside to safety.
He added the flames damaged about 75 percent of the home and it appears as though the fire started in the back of the house.
According to reports, the parts of the home not damaged by fire had heat, smoke and water damage. The home is considered a total loss.
The Red Cross responded to help the family.
The investigation is ongoing.
