PORT ALLEN, LA (WAFB) - A fatal crash that happened early Thursday evening on I-10 eastbound near Highway 415 has claimed the life of a Dallas man.
The man has been identified as 26-year-old Roberto-Carlos Rivas.
Police say the crash occurred as 24-year-old Devin Spence of Carriere, MS was driving a van eastbound in the right lane. At the same time, 39-year-old Demetrius Brown of Houston was also driving eastbound in the right lane in a tractor trailer. Brown slowed down because of congestion in front of him and Spence struck the back of the trailer causing it to overturn.
Rivas who was sitting in the passenger seat of Spence's van was ejected from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries.
Spence and Brown received minor injuries. When released from the hospital, Spence will be booked into the West Baton Rouge Parish jail for negligent homicide. Driver impairment is not suspected at this time, but toxicology tests were taken from both drivers and submitted to the crime lab.
The crash remains under investigation.
