HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana baseball team dropped an 8-3 decision Wednesday to No. 12-ranked Ole Miss in front of a crowd of 1,375 at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Southeastern (9-7) fell behind, 3-0, before coming back with to tie the game in the fifth inning. Ole Miss (16-2) scored a pair of runs in the third and one more in the fourth off starting pitcher Kyle Cedotal.
The Lions broke through against Rebel reliever Austin Blunt, scoring a pair of runs in the fourth. Jacob Williams singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on Cedotal's walk. Jameson Fisher singled past the shortstop, but Williams was thrown out at home by the center fielder.
Andrew Godbold singled to load the bases with one out before Gabe Woods bounced into a fielder's choice, grounding to third. The throw went to second, erasing Godbold and allowing Cedotal to score, but the relay to first was wild allowing Fisher to score.
Williams again started Southeastern's run production in the fifth with a one-out single. Back-to-back singles by Fisher and Godbold plated Williams to tie the game.
Ole Miss grabbed the lead back in the seventh. Gage Pickett (0-1) hit Austin Bousfield with a pitch to open the inning and a grounder to short moved him up to second. Following a single by Austin Anderson, Bousfield scored on Will Allen's ground out to short.
Pickett suffered the loss, despite allowing just the one run in three innings of relief work. Rebel reliever Cheyne Bickel (3-1) earned the win.
Southeastern opens Southland Conference play Friday against Lamar. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
