HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana freshmen Lacey Fritz and Brittney Tschoepe each hit their first collegiate home runs, as the Lady Lions defeated Southern, 6-5, in non-conference softball action Wednesday evening at North Oak Park.

Southeastern improved to 5-7 with its second straight victory. Southern (0-16) is still searching for its first win of the season.

Junior outfielder Vanessa Eng, sophomore designated player Amber Sather and junior third baseman Megan Moore each also drove in runs for the Lions. Fritz and Tschoepe also scored two runs for the Lady Lions.

Junior Spencer Adkinson (1-0) picked up her first win as a Lady Lion in the circle, striking out five and scattering three hits in six innings of work. Senior Rachael Hellyer struck out the side on the way to her first save of the season.

Southern jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Sydney Wesley reached on a one-out single and scored later in the inning on a throwing error by Tschoepe to give the Jaguars the early advantage.

Southeastern answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Fritz led off the inning with a home run over the left field fence, then Tschoepe followed with a home run of her own to straight away center. Later in the inning, sophomore outfielder Katie Lacour singled and scored on an RBI double by Moore to give the Lady Lions a 3-1 lead.

The Lady Lions doubled their output in the bottom of the fourth inning. Fritz and Tschoepe both reached to open the inning with Fritz scoring on an RBI single by Eng. Tschoepe would later come home on a Sather groundout. A throwing error by Jade Luke allowed Eng to score the inning's final run to push the Southeastern lead to 6-1.

Southern would not go away, quietly, as a two-run home run by Jasmine Payne cut the lead to 6-3 in the sixth. A two-run error by Hellyer in the seventh inning allowed the lead to be cut to one, but Hellyer struck out Sara Miller to preserve the victory.

Southeastern will be back in action on Saturday, opening a three-game Southland Conference series with Sam Houston State with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at North Oak Park. The series concludes on Sunday at 12 p.m. Live stats for the series will be available at, where LionVision subscribers can enjoy a live video stream of the series.
