16-year-old charged with attempted murder after shooting, robbery

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A 49-year-old man is in critical condition but expected to survive after he was shot by a teen during a robbery attempt, officials say.

According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, the shooting happened in the 2300 block of Pawnee at roughly 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11. A man and woman exited a nearby store and were walking down the street when they were allegedly robbed by two men.

"It appears as if the couple was targeted while inside the store, and then confronted when they were outside," Cpl. Don Coppola, BRPD, said. "The man was shot once in the chest and the woman was uninjured. The victim is currently in the hospital in critical condition."

Shortly after the shooting, an officer located an unresponsive male. The officer believed the male matched the description of the shooter. The 16-year-old was taken to a medical facility. "It appeared as if he was under the influence of something, which caused him to pass out," said Cpl. Coppola.

Once released from the medical facility, the teen was arrested and charged with armed robbery (two counts), attempted first-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon, and possession of a firearm by a juvenile.

Police have not located the second suspect involved in the incident. If you know anything regarding his identity or whereabouts, call Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-STOP (7867).
