Saints sign safety Jairus Byrd

Updated:

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Three-time Pro-Bowl safety Jairus Byrd came to town on a free agent visit with the Saints today. He leaves only to go back to Buffalo to pack up his house.

Byrd has agreed to a six-year deal with the Saints, according to ESPN's Adam Shefter.

Byrd, who spent last season in Buffalo playing with the franchise tag, was considered to be one of the top - if not the top safetys on the free agent market.  And, he'll be looking to be paid accordingly. Reports say $9 million per season.

But that's just the average, not the cap hit per year.

FOX 8's Sean Fazende computes the Saints are $6.5 million under the salary cap, but General Manager Mickey Loomis has apparently configured the contract so that the salary cap hit is minimal in the first year.
