BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
Southern University is the first stop on a state-wide educational tour about the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
The tour will help explain the ACA and assist students in completing enrollment forms. It will be held on March 19 from 11 to 3 p.m. in the Smith-Brown Memorial Union. It is sponsored by the Southern University Student Health Center along with the Louisiana Center for Health Equity (LCHE) and the Health Crusaders.
The tour is important "because more than one in three young adults aged 18 to 34 are without healthcare coverage in Louisiana," says Alma Stewart, LCHE founder and president. "During this event, students can find out what their premium, deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs will be before making a decision to enroll."
Director of Student Health Center Shirley Wade said the event will help students who did not choose the Health Center's voluntary student health coverage.
"Many are not aware that they will be penalized with their income tax return next year if they do not choose health care coverage," says Shirley Wade, director of the Student Health Center. "This also will assist the university in aligning itself for the upcoming school year in regards to healthcare coverage for our students as we will have better data on the exchange and if our students do indeed qualify to participate."
There will also be health screenings and other vendors.
