ARAB, AL (WAFF) -

Firefighters responded to a fire that destroyed a home in Arab early Saturday morning.

Arab firefighters received the call at 3:48 a.m. for a fire at a home at 1245 Nathan Road. Firefighters said they stayed on the scene until 6 a.m. The occupants were identified as John and Denesa Cook and their two children, Joseph, 15, and Brandon, 10.

The occupants said they were asleep when a breaker "popped" and woke them up. They said John Cook went to investigate, smelled smoke, went to the back and found the back half of the house engulfed in flames. He said he evacuated everyone from the home.

Arab firefighters and 4-C VFD responded to the fire with three trucks. Firefighters had to transport water from a hydrant about a half-mile away. Samaritan EMS was also on the scene.

Authorities said the house is a total loss, but no one was injured in the fire.

The cause of the fire hasn't been determined yet. The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
