MARICOPA, AZ (CBS5) -

Two Valley middle school students are facing charges after allegedly bringing a gun to campus on Thursday.

A student at Desert Wind Middle School told a teacher that a weapon was on campus and there were "rumors" of a shooting, according to Maricopa Police Department spokesman Ricky Alvarado.

Police found an unloaded .380 pistol in a bathroom and a 9 mm bullet, which can't be used in a .380 pistol, in a backpack of one of the students arrested.

Alvarado said there were "allegations" that a shooting was going to take place.

Both Desert Wind Middle School and Santa Cruz Elementary School, which are less than a mile apart, were on lockdown from about 3:40 p.m. to 4:05 p.m. Thursday.

The accused boys, ages 12 and 13, were arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct involving weapons, disruption of an education facility and possession of a deadly weapon on school grounds.
