BBB warns of identity theft scam to businesses

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The Better Business Bureau has issued a warning to contractors about a scam that could potentially drain your bank account.

The BBB warns businesses about letters from the Procurement Office of the U.S. Department of Transportation. The letters request bank account numbers on an "Authorization to release financial information" form.

The letter is signed by Louis A. James, Senior Procurement Officer at DOT. The letter appears on a U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) letterhead with a Washington, D.C. address.

The Office of Inspector General of the DOT advises that this is an ongoing identity theft scheme using easily recognizable logo and letterhead.

If you have already responded to such a request, notify your bank immediately, then contact the Office of the Inspector General hotline at 800-366-4263. You should also contact your local law enforcement agency and the regional U.S. Secret Service office.

For more information, contact the Better Business Bureau at 225-346-5222 or email info@batonrouge.bbb.org.
