AZ convicted child murderer arrested in Las Vegas

A man who fled an Arizona courthouse in 2012 as his jury was deciding a verdict has been captured in Las Vegas.

Jose Lopez was arrested by Deputy U.S. Marshals and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department on Thursday night at his girlfriend's apartment complex in Las Vegas, according to Deputy U.S. Marshal spokesman Frederick Freeman. Lopez had multiple fake IDs.

The Pinal County Superior Court issued a warrant for Lopez's arrest on July 25, 2012 when he didn't show up for his sentence hearing in the death of a friend's 21-month-old child who he was babysitting.

Doctors said the child had extensive skull fractures and died a few days after the child's injuries were discovered by her mother.

Lopez had posted bond and was out of jail during his trial.

He fled the courthouse during a lunch recess and the jury returned guilty verdicts on first-degree murder and child abuse.

Lopez is in Clark County Detention Center awaiting extradition to Pinal County.

He faces 35 years in prison on the murder charge and 17 years on the child abuse charge.
