PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Members of the Phoenix Police Department's Major Offender Unit and their families spent Thursday evening as guests of the Phoenix Suns at US Airways Arena.

The Suns chose several ways to honor Phoenix Police Detective John Hobbs, who died in a shootout Monday while trying to apprehend a violent felony suspect.

Phoenix Police Chief Daniel Garcia joined Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton and Suns President Jason Rowley in presenting the game ball to NBA officials ahead of the match up against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Thunderous applause filled the arena next, as uniformed members of the Major Offender's Unit unfurled a massive American flag that remained on display through the singing of the national anthem.

"We thank the Suns for the opportunity to bring the families out for a little diversion before the final arrangements are going to be made on Monday," said Phoenix Police Lieutenant Sal Freni.

Detective Hobbs will be laid to rest on Monday.

Suns staff was also collecting donations at the arena entrances for the 100 Club of Arizona. That group provides assistance to families of first responders killed or injured in the line of duty.
