Arizona House kills public notice newspaper bill

PHOENIX (AP) -

The Arizona House of Representatives has voted down a bill that would revoke a requirement that public notices be published in newspapers.

Legislators killed House Bill 2554 by Republican Rep. John Kavanagh of Fountain Hills with a 24-33 vote on Thursday.

The bill would have forced the Arizona Corporation Commission to post public notices on its website instead of requiring that they be published in newspapers.

Kavanagh says the publishing requirement is costly and anti-business. Opponents of a similar bill last year said it could lead to a loss in transparency from local governments and hurt small newspapers that rely on the ad revenue.
