PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Two Phoenix police officers were taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons after they inhaled heavy smoke at an apartment fire Thursday afternoon.

The officers were overcome as they knocked on doors alerting tenants of the danger, Phoenix fire Capt. Ruben Saavedra said.

The fire broke out at 3:25 p.m. at 1552 W. Mercer Lane.

Firefighters said when they pulled up, they saw heavy smoke and flames coming from a first-floor apartment, Saavedra said. The blaze was quickly spreading to the second floor.

Four apartments were damaged.

An unknown number of tenants were displaced. None of them suffered any injuries, Saavedra said.
