PRESCOTT, AZ (CBS5) -

Two people are in custody on heroin charges after sheriff's authorities stopped their vehicle on Interstate 40 for speeding and lane drifting, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said.

The driver, Tifani Burns, 31, and a passenger, Randolph Jackson, 51, said they were traveling from Las Vegas to Oklahoma, where they live. Burns handed over her driver's license and a rental agreement for the vehicle.

YCSO dispatchers advised the deputy that the vehicle had been reported stolen in Oklahoma, sheriff's investigators said.

The pair was immediately detained.

During a search of the vehicle, deputies said they found a receipt indicating the pair had actually been in California, contradicting prior statements.

Jackson became belligerent and tried to escape, YCSO said. He was restrained and during a follow-up search, deputies found nearly a half-pound package of heroin inside each of his shoes.

Jackson was arrested on charges of unlawful use of means of transportation, possession of a narcotic drug, possession of a narcotic drug for sale, transportation of a narcotic drug for sale and attempted escape from custody for a felony. He remains in-custody on a $50,000 bond.

Burns was arrested on charges of transportation of a narcotic drug for sale and false reporting to law enforcement. Burns remains in-custody on a $20,000 bond.
