ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

A driver has been charged with negligent homicide after a crash in Ascension Parish Thursday morning.

Louisiana State Police said Sheri Thompson, 56, of Prairieville, died in the wreck. Troopers arrested Dalyn Melancon, 24, of Port Vincent.

The accident happened on LA 42 (Oak Grove-Port Vincent Highway) east of LA 932 (Joe Sevario Road) around 7:30 a.m. That is between Prairieville and Port Vincent.

Tpr. Jared Sandifer said the 2006 Ford F-150 Melancon was driving went off the road, overcorrected, crossed the center line and slammed head-on into the oncoming 2007 Nissan Altima Thompson was driving.

Sandifer said Thompson died from her injuries despite being properly buckled. He added Melancon was not wearing a seatbelt and suffered moderate injuries in the crash.

Investigators reported excessive speed is considered a factor in the wreck. They added impairment is not suspected for either driver, but per protocol in deadly accidents, blood samples were sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Melancon is charged with negligent homicide, careless operation and no seatbelt.
