Town Hall Meeting to address minimum wage

By Dan Parrott

Local residents will be discussing on Thursday minimum wage and if it should be increased at a town hall meeting hosted by State Representative Denise Driehaus.

As of the first of the year, Ohioans are making 70 cents above the federal minimum wage average at $7.95.

President Barack Obama has proposed to raise the minimum wage to $10 an hour, facing opposition from both sides in Washington.

Opponents of the increase say that it could cost the economy 500,000 jobs, while supporters state a raise would life millions out of poverty and stimulate the economy. 34% of Cincinnatians and 53% of children in Cincinnati live below the poverty line.

The meeting is intended to gauge a better understanding of how people in Cincinnati are living on low incomes. The Town Hall begins at 6 p.m. at the Tryed Stone New Beginning Church.
