GLOBE, AZ (CBS5) -

Gila County officials are working to implement new security measures after a man with a pocket knife escaped detection.

Detention officials at the Gila County courthouse said Oscar Fryer bypassed security by using a third-floor stairwell that is restricted for inmate use only.

When officials saw Fryer, they escorted him to a security area, where they found he was carrying a pocket knife.

Fryer was told to remain in the secured area while a Gila County sheriff's deputy could respond and determine if the knife would be considered a weapon. Instead he ran down the front stairwell of the courthouse and left the area.

The knife was turned over to the deputy after officials concluded it would not be considered a weapon.

The county said it will implement new security measures.
