LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – It was around 9 p.m. on Sunday, March 2 and Gary Lucas had just finished his shift as a pizza delivery driver. What Lucas didn't know is he still had one more delivery to make and it was one that would save a life.

St. Matthews Police credit the quick thinking and kindness of Lucas for saving the life of a stricken man with CPR.

"First she screamed," said Lucas, a driver for Domino's Pizza. "Then she said somebody, 'please help me' so I ran over there."

Lucas said he ran to a house where a woman pleaded for help.

"I think she was on the phone with 911 and they told her to put him on the floor," Lucas said. "He was in a chair so we got him on the floor and just kept going."

Lucas is not certified in CPR. However, a 911 dispatcher provided Lucas and the man's wife step by step instructions.

"She was tired. She was weak. And told me to take over so I jumped to it," Lucas said.

St. Matthews Police arrived first on scene.

"The Domino's delivery driver who was performing CPR was absolutely exhausted because he was working so hard," said Detective Dennis McDonald.

The victim survived and is recovering in the hospital. St. Matthews Police said the outcome could've been different if it weren't for Lucas.

"Obviously this Domino's delivery driver is a hero," McDonald said.

Lucas brushed off the compliment.

"I wouldn't go that far," said Lucas. "They're the heroes. Our cops and our military. They're the heroes - not me."

The family of the victim has declined comment and asked for privacy concerning the matter.
