NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -- Two people are dead after a shooting at a rap concert in New Orleans outside the iconic Mardi Gras World near the Mississippi River.

It happened before 11:15 p.m., where Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan had performed.  The shooting was the second at the location on Fat Tuesday.  A third person was injured in an unrelated shooting earlier in the evening.

New Orleans police were called to the parade float den in the 1300 block of Port of New Orleans Place to investigate the double shooting as a relatively peaceful carnival season wrapped up.

"Two men were involved in a gun battle, which resulted in both of them losing their lives," New Orleans Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas said.

The victims have been identified as Deron Hitchens, 25, and 29-year-old Kendrell Fields.

Both Hitchens and Fields were shot several times and pronounced dead on the scene.  One of the men was found inside a silver Toyota.

Serpas said the investigation is very preliminary, but detectives think the shooting was not random.

The earlier shooting happened around 10 p.m. in the 1400 block of Port of New Orleans Place.  The 25-year-old victim was shot in the shoulder.  He was taken to an area hospital where he is listed in stable condition.
