PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The Phoenix Law Enforcement Association's garage will be the site for a benefit barbecue Thursday to raise funds for the families of slain Phoenix police officer John Hobbs and fellow officer Albert Casadose, who was wounded in a shootout with a suspect.

Meanwhile Hobbs' family issued a statement Thursday thanking the community for its support.

"Thank you for the outpouring of support you have shown our family. John was so proud and honored to live here and wear the Phoenix uniform. Please keep our children in your prayers as they struggle forward without their hero here on Earth. Being a dad was John's proudest title and a responsibility he never too lightly. We miss him greatly."

Thank you,
From the wife and family
of Detective John Hobbs

"Everybody is hurting from this loss," PLEA President Joe Clure told CBS 5's Nicole Crites during Thursday's Start Smart Morning Show.

Clure said that in addition to providing financial support for the families, the barbecue will also be therapeutic for many people.

He said it will be a perfect opportunity for the police department, the city of Phoenix and its citizens to share in the grief of the loss of an officer and to begin the healing process.

"People want to do something and this is the opportunity to make that happen," Clure said.

The barbecue will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the PLEA garage at 1102 W. Adams St., in Phoenix.

All the funds raised at the event will be donated to the two families.

"Typically, we'll raise $10,000 to $30,000 on these events that go directly to the families to help alleviate the financial stress," Clure said.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton and Police Chief Daniel Garcia will be joined by Clure, Phoenix Police Sergeants and Lieutenants Association President Sean Mattson, Phoenix councilmen Mike Nowakowski and Danny Valenzuela, and others in welcoming the public in a show of support for the families of Hobbs and Casadose.
