SORRENTO, LA (WAFB) - A recent audit released by the State Legislative Auditor says the town of Sorrento has problems when it comes to collecting money; specifically, traffic fines and court costs by the police department, and delinquent water bills on the city's side.
Nearly $53,000 was left uncollected on the traffic ticket side and $20,000 on the delinquent water bills for fiscal year 2013 the audit says.
"I don't what to say, that's amazing. I know my electricity gets cut off when I don't pay it, so I don't know who's getting away with it. I didn't know anything about this," said one Sorrento resident.
"I don't really know what their problem is, but to me, it's a screwed up town - personally," says another.
The management agreed with the audit findings and pledged to try and work the issues out.
The audit recommended that the Mayor and Town Council should review monthly detailed traffic ticket activity logs to include a lists of tickets issued. Plus, they recommend the town should involve the town attorney to assist in collection efforts.
The audit says that should increase town resources.
