Suspected drunk driver faces vehicular homicide charge after crash

ACADIA PARISH, LA (WAFB) - A woman accused of driving drunk was arrested on vehicular homicide and other charges after her passenger died in a single-vehicle crash Sunday.

Emily Marcantel, 22, of Lake Charles, was booked into the Acadia Parish Jail on charges of vehicular homicide, reckless operation and no seat belt. Taylor Bellard, 22, died in the wreck.

Louisiana State Police reported the accident happened on LA 370 near Roxie Road in Acadia Parish just before 8 p.m.

Troopers said the Ford Focus Marcantel was driving went off the road in a curve, hit the ditch and flipped. They said she was not injured despite not wearing a seatbelt.

Tpr. Stephen Hammons reported Bellard was also not wearing a seatbelt, but suffered badly injured. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead a short time after arrival.

According to LSP, Marcantel's blood alcohol level was above the legal limit.

The crash remains under investigation.
