9th grader arrested for bringing loaded gun to school for ‘protection'

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A 9th grader was arrested this morning after deputies found a loaded gun in his backpack.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office responded to McKinley High School at roughly 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 28. School officials called for assistance after they located a .380 caliber handgun in the student's backpack.

"He stated he brought it for protection," Casey Rayborn Hicks, a representative with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office, said. "No threats were reported."

The 16-year-old was arrested and charged with illegal possession of a firearm on a school campus and illegal possession of a firearm.
