ACADIA PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

Louisiana State Police Haz-Mat teams were called out to a major well blowout near Eunice in Acadia Parish Tuesday.

The affected area is on LA 13 between LA 370 and Tiger Lane, which is south of Eunice. There were about 40 residents in the nearby area who were asked to evacuate, and officials report that they will remain out of their homes throughout the weekend.

"Troop I has been advised that an evacuation of nearby residences and the Cleco Power Plant, approximately one-and-a-half miles from the site, is currently being conducted," said Tpr. James Anderson with LSP. "The area is mostly farmland with mixed residential."

The detour route from south of Eunice is LA 13 to LA 368 to LA 370 to LA 755 into Eunice.

Troopers said employees with Black Creek Drilling were "drilling a natural gas well when they lost pressure, creating the blowout."

Crews from Texas-based "Wild Well Control" arrived to help and said they were trying to cap the well, but the work will take several days to complete.

There are no reports of injuries.

Those who live in the evacuated area will be allowed to go home with emergency responders to retrieve their personal belongings.
