Mississippi River reopens after oil spill

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WAFB) - Traffic began flowing once again on the Mississippi River Monday afternoon following an oil spill that left it closed most of the weekend.

More than 30,000 gallons of light crude oil spilled into the river Saturday after a barge hit a tow boat.

The spill shut down about 65 miles of river between Vacherie and New Orleans, including the port there.

The Coast Guard said at least 30 ships were waiting for the river to reopen.
