BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Baton Rouge Police arrested a woman accused of smoking marijuana in her vehicle while her two small kids were sleeping in the car. She is also accused of leaving the children in the vehicle and going into the Cortana Mall to use the restroom.
Police say it happened Sunday. An officer working extra duty at the mall said an anonymous citizen reported two small children were left alone and were asleep in a white Ford Taurus.
When the officer arrived, they found a 5-year-old and a 2-year-old asleep in the backseat.
An overhead page was broadcast in the mall for the owner of the vehicle to return to the car.
According to the probable cause report, 30-year-old Jasmin Nicole Washington arrived at the car and said she was the owner.
The officer reported that he could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from her. The officer reports that Washington said "she smoked it all up."
Washington was escorted to the mall's security office and the officer saw her trying to hide a white piece of paper behind a file cabinet in the office. The officer checked out the paper and reported that he saw a green leafy substance thought to be marijuana.
Washington admitted to the officer that she smoked the marijuana in the car while they slept, then she went into the mall to use the restroom and went to Footlocker to speak to her sister.
She told officers that she was in the mall for about 15 minutes.
Washington was arrested and booked on charges of child desertion, contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, and possession of marijuana. No bond has been set at this time.
