BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Jury selection has started in the trial of a man suspected of killing his ex-girlfriend and two other women in 2011.

Courtney Williams, 23, of Baton Rouge, is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Josephine Lathers, 76; Brittany Lee, 18; and Clarisa Cobbing, 19. Williams is also charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder.

Prosecutors said the death penalty was taken off the table after mental health experts determined Williams is mildly retarded.

The Baton Rouge Department reported the shooting happened in the 1000 block of Progress Street in north Baton Rouge on Sept. 10, 2011.

Investigators said the incident is considered to be a case of domestic violence and later added Cobbing was the suspect's former girlfriend.
