Annual Big Buddy Burger Bash a success, but you can still donate

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Last Wednesday was all about the burgers for one local organization. It was the annual Big Buddy Burger Bash.

"Burger Bash is our annual fundraiser for a scholarship program. So we have students in the Big Buddy program that go from Elementary all the way to high school. And when they get in college we want to be able to help them out. So our scholarship program helps them buy books and helps when they are in school," said Big Buddy Operations Manager Lauren Smith.

This past Wednesday was the 24th annual Big Buddy Burger Bash. Over the past 24 years the Big Buddy program has provided over 50 scholarships from the money raised at each Burger Bash. Smith says the program has helped hundreds of children in the Baton Rouge area.

"We have after school programs at seven schools in Baton Rouge and all those students go to after school from 3 to 5 and then they also have a chance to have a mentor and participate in Saturday activities," said Smith

This is a Burger Bash after all and someone has to cook all those burgers. For many years that has fallen on Jeffery Hebert and the guys from the Catholic High Men's Club.

"It's good for all of us. We all get along. We're good buddies. It gives us something to bond together for a good cause and we enjoy it. Its good company," said Jeffery Hebert, Catholic High Men's Club.

The men use a secret spice rub on the burgers and cook them on a custom charcoal grill. The grill holds about 90 burgers at full capacity. Which is good because these guys have to cook 600 burgers.

"This is the norm. Piece of cake they say," Hebert said.

For $10, scholarship donors got a burger with all the fixings, chips, ice cream, and a drink. $4,000 was raised for Big Buddy. But don't worry if you missed out this year. You can still buy a ceremonial burger.

"If you missed Burger Bash you can still go online and purchase a burger or you can donate online. We have Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram so there are plenty of ways to connect with Big Buddy," said Smith.

The organization says they are already looking forward to next year's big 25th anniversary Burger Bash celebration.
