Interim Superintendent Ron Hinton says the lockdown was put in place to protect the children after a woman was murdered at the Columbus Department of Health and Human Services.

Hinton tells News Leader 9 that the victim, Tonya Moses-Charles, 44, had children at Central and PCIS.

Central was on lockdown, the elementary school was on a yellow lockdown, and PCIS was on a red lockdown.

Hinton says the suspected shooter, Tonya's estranged husband Lyle Charles, is on the list of people with permission to check the children out of the school. However, the coroner says Tonya and Lyle did not have children together. Lyle committed suicide hours after Tonya was murdered.

Seventh graders at PCIS told News Leader 9 they were hidden under desks during the lockdown.

All lockdowns have now been lifted.
