BOISE, ID (KBOI/CBS) - Two dads and their children walked nine miles through the snow after getting stranded on a family outing.

Will Murkle, with his 10-year-old daughter Megun, went on a trip with John Julian and his children, 8-year-old Samantha and 7-year-old Isaac.

Their vehicle was stuck in the snow, they didn't have any food or water and they were not wearing warm clothing. They filled the one water bottle they had with snow melt along the way and found a deserted car with cookies inside to eat.

The group finally made it back home after a long, tiring 19-hour trek.

"The kids did surprisingly well," Will Murkle said. "I mean, there were a couple times they had their breakdown moments, which I would expect, but other than that we did good."

The Murkles said they were ecstatic to come upon the first home along their walk, but realized no one was home there.

Half a mile later they found a cabin with a family inside who informed the group there was a TV report informing the public they were missing.

It was a happy ending, but Will Murkle said next time he goes for a drive, he's going to do things differently.

"Never forget a winter coat, even when you're planning on not getting out of the vehicle during winter time," he said. "Definitely be more prepared for 'what ifs'."
