BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The stepmother of a 2-year-old who was found strangled to death in 2006 has pleaded guilty to a criminal conspiracy charge.
Shelna Jackson Matamoros and her husband were originally facing first degree murder charges for the 2006 death of 2-year-old Malaysa Matamoros. She was found strangled to death in her father's apartment.
Detectives found the couple had taken out large insurance policies on the girl prior to her death.
Shelna Matamoros pleaded guilty to an amended charge with credit for time served and active supervised probation for five years.
Cedric Matamoros, the child's father, died while behind bars in early December from kidney failure before he was able to go to trial.
