BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Police have made an arrest in connection with a deadly shooting at an apartment complex early Tuesday morning.

The Baton Rouge Police Department said Jamal Variste, 18, was booked early Thursday morning in the shooting death of Devonta Jenks, also 18. Variste is charged with second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon.

Detectives said they believe Variste shot Jenks over an argument involving a "mutual girlfriend."

Jenks was found shot to death at the Spanish Arms Apartments on Denham Street around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. It was the first homicide in 2014 in the 70805 zip code.

District Attorney Hillar Moore said he was disappointed the murder was the fourth in 2014 in the parish involving a teenaged victim.
