LifeShare Blood Centers need your help

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The recent winter storms have taken a toll on the area's blood supply.

LifeShare Blood Centers which supply blood to 140 hospitals including the Baton Rouge General as well as hospitals in East Texas and South Arkansas say weather-related issues have forced them to cancel a number of blood drives.

Add to that less than normal donor levels and officials say it puts them in a bind.

"We are critically low on types of O and B, even some A's," says Denny Day, regional executive director of Life Share. "Our platelette collections have gone down and we're trying to make sure that people can come in and volunteer to give blood so that we can make sure that blood is at the hospitals when the patients need it."

Day says it can take up to 48 hours to process and test the blood so they're asking people to consider donating on a regular basis.

To donate you can call (225) 383-7728 or go to their www.lifeshare.org.
