Baton Rouge 5th grader arrested for bringing gun to school to be 'cool'

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A fifth grade student from Wedgewood Elementary was arrested Monday around 1 p.m.

According to reports, an anonymous student told a school administrator that another student had a weapon. The unloaded .45 caliber weapon was found in the student's backpack.

The student, a 12-year-old boy, will be charged with illegal possession of a firearm on a school campus and is going to be booked into juvenile detention. Police say no threats were made, and the child told police he brought the gun to school to be "cool."

Police say he took the gun from a relative's home.
